The Growth of Towns

           Towns in the Middle Ages developed around castles & manor houses. Cities developed from large town houses. These towns and cities became the centers of rural communities. To receive a household income, farmers had to sell their surplus crops at the local markets. Farmers only made up some of the population in these towns. Many other people moved to these towns to live & work.
