Did the places that the towns developed in have to be expanded?

Sometimes, castles walls had to be expanded to include various shops and new homes. These town walls might have had to be expanded if the town began to grow to large for its original walls. To expand the town, walls were often taken down, and the stones were then used to construct the new shops and homes. These castle walls were very safe in times of conflict, such as wars or domestic disputes. Peace and prosperity of the later Middle Ages made towns walls less necessary. By the time this happened, the towns had already expanded too much and outgrew their walls. With the expansion of these towns, that meant that the farmers had to also expand their farms so that they could grow more crops for all the people that lived in the town. As the town got larger, trade came into factor to get the resources they needed for the town. With the advent of trade and commerce, feudal life declined. As the tradesmen became wealthier, they resented having to give their profits to their lords. Arrangements were made for the townspeople to pay a fixed annual sum to the lord or king and gain independence for their town which gave the people the power to govern their own town.
